Electromagnetic Braking

Generally all brakes make use of friction for stopping a rotating body. However this produces a large amount of heat and sound energy and also lead to considerable wear and tear due to friction. Thus to overcome this drawback a new concept of braking has been developed that uses electromagnetism to retard a moving object. Its main advantage is that there is no physical contact between the braking system and rotating drum. Also the braking distance is comparitively less . It makes use of eddy current formed due to passage of electric current through magnetic coil.
